Your Guide to Candle Care Basics.

In this guide, we’ll cover not only the fundamentals but also those candle insights you never knew existed. Whether you’re troubleshooting a candle issue or seeking ways to extend your candle’s beauty, get ready for a thorough breakdown and some illuminating ideas.

Here are three straight forward tips to ensure your candle’s longevity and optimal burn.

  • Tip 1 – The Vital Starting Point!: When igniting your Oscar + Rosie candle for the first time, it’s crucial to be patient and wait for at least 3-4 hours or until the wax pool extends to the edges of the container. Only when the wax pool has completely liquefied on top should you extinguish your candle. Why is this step so essential, you wonder? Extinguishing the flame before the melted wax reaches the vessel’s edges creates a “memory” within the wax, and this position will persist throughout the burn, causing the common issue known as “tunneling.” This results in the candle burning down the center of the vessel, leaving a rim of wax around the jar’s edge, and eventually causing the candle to suffocate and go out.
  • Tip 2 – Tunneling: If you notice your candle is tunneling, try this: Gently remove the ring of wax around the glass’s edge to create a level surface for the wax. Additionally, consider “pinching” off the soft, black, ashy part of the wooden wick before relighting. This might rescue your candle from further tunneling.
  • Tip 3 – Maintain a Clean and Even Burn: To ensure your candle burns cleanly and evenly, it’s important to “pinch” off the soft, black, ashy part of the wooden wick before lighting it each time. This will consistently deliver the best flame, and your candle will appreciate it.
